Carillon Lighting Ushers in the Holiday Season at WC

College Chorale Leads in Singing of Christmas Carols

President Dan DiBiasio Thursday (Dec. 3) said the annual Carillon Lighting Ceremony symbolizes both a seasonal transition and a seasonal beginning.

"We are transitioning from the season of thanks to the season of light," he said in welcoming students, faculty, staff and friends to the annual event. "In this season of light, and joy, and giving, we have the opportunity to reflect on and reveal, as Quakers believe, that there is that of God in everyone.

"And so at this time, may each of you have the gladness of the season, which is hope; the spirit of the season, which is peace; and the heart of the season, which is love."

The late afternoon festivities included socializing with cookies and hot chocolate and singing Christmas carols led by Cathy Roma and members of the College Chorale. Those in attendance filled a trailer with personal care items and cleaning supplies earmarked for the Clinton County Homeless Shelter.

Also, everyone was encouraged to write a message on colored paper and place it upon the boughs of a "Wish Tree" — a potted evergreen at the foot of the Carillon. The tree was subsequently brought into the lobby of Boyd Cultural Arts Center for display during holiday programs held throughout the next 10 days.

The "Wish Tree" was inspired by Yoko Ono's peacemaking efforts and the theme of thinking globally and acting locally.

"The tree becomes a collective prayer in a way," DiBiasio said, noting that some wishes are deeply personal and others are global wishes for peace and a better future for humankind. "Others are more immediate and practical — say a wish to survive final exam week!"
