HANOVER, IN – With the tying run on second base with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, junior Catlin Shilling bowed her back and got out of the jam enabling Wilmington to secure the non-conference doubleheader sweep of Hanover Saturday, 7-0 and 7-6.
Shilling (Waverly, OH/Waverly) started to wiggle out of trouble with a strike out, and then got the lead runner out at third base on a fielder’s choice for the second out. She ended the game with another strike out. Shilling picked her up second win of the season, hurling 2 2/3 innings of relief, allowing an unearned run with four strikeouts.
While it was Shilling that stymied Hanover in the circle, it was the big bat of junior Erika Lee (Blanchester, OH/Blanchester) that enabled the Lady Quakers to complete the comeback victory. Lee homered in the top of the seventh inning to snap a 5-5 tie. It was the third and fourth runs of the inning. Senior Brooke Byrne (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) tied the game with a two-run double in the seventh, and she scored ahead of Lee on the homer.
Junior Olivia Hutchison’s (Mason, OH/Mason) two-out, two-run single in the fifth inning got the WC scoring under way, bringing the Lady Quakers to a one-run deficit at 3-2. After the Panthers got both runs back in their half of the fifth, Wilmington answered with a single run in the sixth – setting up the seventh inning fireworks.
In the opener, junior Danielle Monnier (Houston, OH/Houston) allowed just one runner past first base in two-hitting Hanover in the complete game victory. She struck out seven with one walk.
Byrne helped WC break open a close game with a three-run bomb in the top of the seventh inning. She finished 3-for-4 with three RBI. Shilling added to the damage with a solo shot. Junior Stacy Lunsford (Wilmington, OH/Clinton-Massie) scored three times in the win.
Wilmington (12-2) returns to field for its home opener 3 p.m. Wednesday with a non-conference doubleheader with Franklin.
