Quakers place 9th at Florida Citrus Tournament

FT. LAUDERDALE, Florida (January 3, 2003) ญญ The Wilmington College Quakers placed ninth at the 2002 Florida Citrus Open in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Corey Norvell (Dayton) led the way with a first place finish in the 184 pound weight class while Derek Beamer (Corydon, IN) placed fourth in the 174 pound weight class.

Norvell, the sophomore184-pound wrestler needed just four victories to defeat the field that included 5th ranked Ryan Jones of Pacific University. Half of those victories came from falls while he defeated Justin Stern of New York University by a 7-5 count in the championship.

Beamer recorded two consecutive victories in the championship bracket before being knocked out by the eventual champion, 2002 National Qualifier and conference foe Mark Hawald 3-1. In the consolation round he defeated Jeff Wright of Olivet College before falling 3-0 to another conference foe, Joe Hada of Heidelberg, in the third place match.

The other section of the Florida Tournament included four dual matches. The Quakers were unable to claim a victory in any of the matches, as they were downed 21-12 by Central (Iowa), 33-15 by Ursinus, 28-18 by Thiel and 28-9 by Olivet. Both Beamer and Norvell posted four victories in the dual matches, to only Quakers able to win in all four matches.

The next match for the Quakers is on Tuesday, January 7 when the team travels to Berea, Ohio to face off against the 18th ranked Yellow Jackets of Baldwin-Wallace Collge.
