Three Quakers score as men's soccer posts victory

September 7, 2012

WILMINGTON - The Wilmington College men's soccer team earned its first victory of the season, beating Mount St. Joseph, 3-1, Friday in the nightcap of the 2012 Kiwanis Classic at Williams Stadium. The game was moved to the turf field following a two-hour weather delay.

The Fightin' Quakers came out and immediately put pressure on the visiting Lions as WC hit the post three times in the game's first 15 minutes.

"We hit the post twice (last week) against Allegheny," said head coach Bud Lewis. "It starts working on your confidence."

As Wilmington was continuing its offensive threats, sophomore Antonio Trujillo (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) needed to come up big a couple of times in the first half with some spectacular saves that kept the game in a scoreless tie. Trujillo earned the victory, making five saves,

Sophomore Erik Hammar (Stockholm, Sweden/Ava Gymnasium) opened the scoring in the 51st minute, just minutes after missing on a chance to give Wilmington the lead. The Lions earned the equalizer in the 68th minute.

"You have to give Mount St. Joseph credit," said Lewis.

Wilmington took the lead for good on junior Jeff Graham's (Kettering, OH/Carroll) first goal of the season in the 79th minute, then sophomore Evan Schlagetter (Sidney, OH/Sidney) added an insurance tally in the 86th minute.

WC will play for the 2012 Kiwanis Classic championship 7:30 p.m. Saturday against Wittenberg, who were 3-1 winners over Muskingum. Muskingum will play the Mount 5 p.m. Saturday in the consolation match. The location for the game, Charlie Gilhart Field or Williams Stadium, will be determined in the morning.
