Quakers rake in awards at OAC Coaches Meeting

WC receives Coach of Year, Midfielder of Year, Goalkeeper of Year and Co-Forward of Year honors

WILMINGTON ‹ The Wilmington College Quakers took home numerous pieces of hardware after the 2004 Men's Ohio Athletic Conference Coaches meeting, as the Quakers had four special award winners, four first team All-Conference members, one second team and two honorable mention award winners.

Head Coach Bud Lewis was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, selected by his peers in the OAC. In 2004, his 30th season as coach, he led the team to a 16-2-2 regular season record, en route to becoming just the 18th coach in NCAA history to pick up 400 career victories.

Sophomore midfielder Chad Garman (Dayton/Chaminade-Julienne) was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Midfielder of the Year after leading the Quakers in points with 31 and goals with 12 while dishing out seven assists, good for second on the team.

Sophomore forward Alex Van der Sluijs earned Co-Forward of the Year honors along with Ohio Northern's Adam Gatton. Van der Sluijs led the Quakers with nine assists while scoring nine goals, good for a tie for second on the team.

Junior goalkeeper Justin Saylor (Cleveland Hts./Cleveland Hts.) was named the OAC Goalkeeper of the Year after recording a 0.79 goals against average, allowing just 13 goals in 18 games. Saylor finished the season strong, picking up a trio of shutouts in his last three games, shutting out Baldwin-Wallace to give the team the regular season OAC title, and then shut out Baldwin-Wallace and John Carroll to help the team to a 2-0 record in the OAC Tournament, earning the program's first tournament title.

Eric Schultz (Cincinnati/Anderson) joined the aforementioned players on the All-League first team. Schultz, a sophomore defender, was named to the 2003 Honorable Mention squad. On the year he dished out one assist while leading a defense that allowed a goals against average of 0.88 and held opponents to just 209 shots in 20 games.

Sophomore Ross Garber (Dayton/Carroll) was named to the second team. The defender scored a goal and dished out an assist on the year.

A pair of juniors, David Benedict (Cincinnati/North College Hill) and Jason Glover (Ross/Ross) were named to the Honorable Mention squad. Benedict has scored seven goals and dished out four assists in his 20 games. The 2003 First Team member now has 29 career goals, eight away from moving into the top 10 in program history. Glover, the third Quaker defender to win an All-League award in 2004 has played and started in all 20 games during the year.

The Quakers, currently 16-2-2 will play on Saturday, November 13 when they host either Wheaton (Ill.) or Fontbonne in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Charlie Gilhart Field on the campus of Wilmington College, with kickoff set for 6:00 p.m.
