WILMINGTON,
Ohio The Wilmington College Quakers advanced to the
Ohio Athletic Conference Final to defend their championship
by shutting out the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin-Wallace College
2-0 on Tuesday evening.
The
two teams played a scoreless first half with the Quakers holding
the advantage in shots, 15-4.
In
the second half, Phil Walter (Columbus/Hamilton Township)
shot a ball that Baldwin-Wallace's Jim Synk intentional hand
balled out of the goal. As a result, the Quakers were awarded
a penalty kick, which Alex Van der Sluijs (Dayton/Carroll)
made good on when he beat the keeper to the lower right corner.
The
Quakers' second goal came when Alex's brother Derek Van der
Sluijs tracked down a clearing ball hit by Michael Williams
(Ft. Thomas, KY/Newport Central Catholic). The Yellow Jackets'
keeper came out to play the cleared ball and Van der Sluijs
stole the ball and scored into an open net.
For
the game the Quakers held the advantage in both shots and
corner kicks, 29-9 and 4-3 respectively.
Justin
Saylor (Cleveland Heights/Cleveland Heights) played the first
half in goal for the Quakers. Brandon Bernhardt (Cincinnati/Anderson)
relieved Saylor in the second half stopping three shots. Bernhardt
also picked up his seventh win of the season.
On
the season the Quakers have nine total shutouts. With the
win the Quakers improve to 13-5-1 overall, while Baldwin-Wallace
falls to 14-6-1 overall.
The
next match for the Green and White is Saturday, November 5th
when they travel north to take on the Blue Streaks of John
Carroll University in the Ohio Athletic Conference Championship
game, with kickoff set for 2:00pm.
