Quakers fall to ONU

Quakers eliminated from OAC race

(WC Press Release) Wilmington, OH (October 29, 2003) -- The Wilmington College men's soccer team fell to Ohio Northern University 2-1 on Senior Night at Charlie Gilhart Field. The loss was the fourth straight for Wilmington and evened their record in conference play at 4-4 on the season.

Senior Ryan Grant got the Quakers on the board early in the first half when his penalty kick found the upper left corner of the net to give the Quakers a 1-0 lead.

Ohio Northern answered in the 27th minute when Mark Pupillo converted on a penalty kick of his own to tie the game at one goal apiece.

The score would remain knotted at one until the 80th minute when the Polar Bears' Andrew Schultz found Adam Gatton on a cross from the right side for the eventual game-winning header. The Quakers, who out shot the Polar Bears in the match 32-23, were unable to tie the score over the game's final nine minutes and fell by a final of 2-1.

Senior Ken Howard and Justin Saylor split time in the net for the Quakers combining for four saves while allowing one goal apiece.

With the loss, the Quakers fall to 9-9-1 overall on the season and 4-4 in conference play while ONU improved to 11-8-0 and 6-2 in OAC action with the win.

The next match for Wilmington is scheduled for Saturday, November 1 when the team hosts conference opponent Capital University in their final remaining match of the regular season. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Charlie Gilhart Field.
