second straight
Benedict
scores 16th goal of season
(WC Press Release)
Wilmington, OH (October 21, 2003) -- The Wilmington College Quakers
dropped their second conference game in a row as the visiting Otterbein
Cardinals came to Charlie Gilhart Field and came away with a 3-1
decision.
The loss drops
the Quakers to 9-7-1 on the year and 4-2 in the OAC while Otterbein
improves to 8-6-1 and 4-2 in the OAC.
The Quakers
came out and took an early advantage when David Benedict (Cincinnati/North
College Hill) took a shot from the left corner and beat the Cardinal
goalie to the far post. The goal came less than five minutes into
the match, and was Benedict's team leading 16th of the year.
It was all
Otterbein from there though, as Angelo Manzo, the Cardinal's leading
scorer, added his 11th goal of the year off of an assist from Drew
Cheesman. Manzo's goal would send the game to a 1-1 tie at the half.
The second half was a physical one that saw 9 total fouls and two
yellow cards. With 26:35 remaining in the game the Cardinals got
the eventual game winner when Cheesman took a rebound and scored
a goal of his own. With Wilmington scrambling to tie the game, Jeurell
Smith was able to put the game out of reach when he took a pass
from Manzo and scored with only 2:52 on the clock. Wilmington ran
out of time and saw Otterbein leave with a 3-1 win.
Saylor played
all 90 minutes in goal for the Quakers, recording two saves in the
contest.
Each team was
recorded 13 shots in the contest, while Wilmington had twice as
many corner kicks with 6.
The next game
for Wilmington will be Saturday the 25th of October when they travel
north to take on the John Carroll Blue Streaks, with kickoff set
for 7 p.m.
