Quakers drop
game to Heidelberg
Team loses
first OAC contest of season
(WC Press Release)
Wilmington, OH (October 18, 2003) -- The Wilmington College Quakers
dropped their first conference game of the year, and their sixth
game overall to the Heidelberg Student Princes. Wilmington's record
falls to 9-6-1 overall and 4-1 in the OAC while Heidelberg improves
to 7-6-1 and 1-4 in the OAC.
The first half
saw each team struggle to put a goal in the opposing net. Each team
found many chances, but neither was able to put a goal on the scoreboard.
Wilmington came out shooting, with thirteen shots in the half, to
Heidelberg's seven. The best scoring chance for either team came
when David Benedict (Cincinnati/North College Hill) found himself
open in front of the goal, but Chad Fogle came up with a big save
for The 'Berg, sending the game to halftime as a scoreless tie.
The second half
saw a different side to each team. Each team came out more physical
and even more determined to score. The second half saw five yellow
cards and twenty total fouls. However, the only scoring of the half
came when Orlando Altieri flicked on a header off of a free kick
from Ricky Mahon and beat Quaker goalie Justin Saylor, who was unable
to push the shot over the crossbar. Wilmington's best scoring chance
came with only 3:19 on the clock when they were awarded a penalty
kick, resulting from a Heidelberg handball in the box. Benedict
took the kick, which he placed towards the right corner of the goal,
only to see Fogle make a diving save.
The Quakers
out shot their opponents 20 - 18 while each team was equally physical,
with 17 and 19 fouls respectively.
The next game
for the Quakers will be on Tuesday, the 21st of October when they
will play host to Otterbein, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
