Garman scores hat trick in win

Quakers improve win streak to seven

WILMINGTON — The Wilmington College Quakers extended their winning streak to seven tonight as they defeated the Pioneers of Marietta College, 5-2.

The Quakers and Pioneers played to a scoreless first half and started off the second half scoreless until Chad Garman (Dayton/Chaminade-Julienne) scored his first goal of the night when he found a free ball by the post and put it past the Marietta goalkeeper. The Quakers scored again when Ryan Phillips (West Chester/Fenwick) sent a pass from the left into Garman who finished to the right side. Garman was not done for the night as he picked up his first career hat trick a mere 26 seconds later when Alex Van der Sluijs (Dayton/Carroll) sent a corner kick into the box where Garman redirected it past the keeper for his third goal.

Matt Hoenie (Cincinnati/McNicholas) scored his first career goal off a free kick giving the Quakers a four goal lead. Marietta then scored when Jayson Pendell took a pass from the upper box and put and beat the Quaker keeper to the far post. Greg Staten (Mason/Mason) added the fifth and final goal for the Quakers when he took Brian Deal’s (Sidney/Sidney) pass and beat the Marietta keeper to the far right before Marietta’s Josh Mains finished the game when he scored with just over two minutes remaining in the game.

The Quakers held an edge in both periods as they out-shot the Pioneers 12-1 in the first period, 14-7 in the second and 26-8 for the game.

Justin Saylor (Cleveland Heights/Cleveland Heights) picked up the win moving him to 7-0-1 for the season playing just over 59 minutes of scoreless soccer.

With the win the Quakers move to 9-1-1 on the year and 2-0 in conference play. The Pioneers fall to 3-4-1 for the year and 0-2 in the conference.

The Quakers next game is scheduled for Saturday, October 9th as the host the Purple Raiders of Mount Union. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
