beat Mount Union 3-2

Wilmington, OH (October 4, 2003) -- The Wilmington College men's
soccer team defeated inter-conference rival Mount Union 3-2 in Alliance,
OH on Saturday.
The Quakers
took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute when David Benedict (Cincinnati/North
College Hill) scored unassisted to give Wilmington the early advantage.
Less than two minutes later, the Quakers scored again, this time
from the foot of Mark Kinsel (Canal Winchester/Canal Winchester)
who took the feed from Michael Williams (Ft. Thomas, KY/Newport
Central Catholic) to beat the Purple Raiders goalkeeper to push
Wilmington's lead to two.
In the second
half, the Purple Raiders cut the lead to one on a goal from Greg
Reynolds who beat keeper Justin Saylor (Cleveland Heights/Cleveland
Heights) on an assist from Matt Bednar. The Quakers answered in
the 78th minute when Benedict recorded his second unassisted goal
of the match to give Wilmington a 3-1 lead with just over 10 minutes
to play. Mount Union would again cut the lead to one in the 88th
minute when Scott Gill found the back of the net on an assist from
Dan Sears but were unable to tie the score over the game's final
two minutes giving Wilmington the 3-2 win.
Goalkeeper Justin
Saylor recorded five saves while allowing two goals over 90 minutes
of play for the Quakers, who were outshot in the match 11-5. With
the win,
Wilmington improves
its record to 6-5-1 (1-0 OAC) overall on the season while Mount
Union falls to 7-3-1 (0-1 OAC).
The next match
for the Quakers is scheduled for Tuesday, October 7 when the team
travels to Marietta, OH to take on the Marietta Pioneers. Match
time is set for 7:00 p.m.
