Quakers pick up OAC victory

(WC PRESS RELEASE) WESTERVILLE, Ohio (October 2, 2004) – The Wilmington College men’s soccer team continued their winning streak with a 2-0 victory over conference rival Otterbein on Saturday afternoon.

Alex Van der Sluijs (Dayton/Carroll) and David Benedict (Cincinnati/North College Hill) each found the back of the net in the team’s shutout victory.

The Green and White got the first goal of the game when Chad Garman (Dayton/Chaminade-Julienne) found an open Van der Sluijs, who beat the Otterbein keeper with 22 minutes gone in the game.

The two teams played even for the next 50 minutes until Van der Sluijs found Garman who promptly one-touched the ball in front of the Cardinal net, and the Benedict shot on goal gave the visitors the 2-0 lead.

Justin Saylor (Cleveland Heights/Cleveland Heights) picked up the shutout win, stopping three shots in the game, improving his record to 6-0-1 on the season and giving him his second shutout on the year.

With the win, the Quakers improve to 8-1-1 on the season and 1-0 in the OAC, while Otterbein falls to 4-3-1 on the season and 0-1 in league play.

The next game for the 16th ranked Green and White is on Wednesday, October 6 as the team hosts Marietta College with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. at Charlie Gilhart Field.
