Quakers score in non-conference victory

Release) BETHANY, West Virginia (September 25, 2004) ñ The
Wilmington College Quaker soccer team defeated Bethany 5-1 on
Saturday afternoon, improving their record on the season to 7-1-1.
The Quakers
wasted no time finding the back of the net in the game when David
Benedict (Cincinnati/North College Hill) scored off of a Mark Kinsel
(Canal Winchester/Canal Winchester) assist, giving the team the 1-0
lead. The team scored their game-winning goal with 20 minutes gone
in the game when Ryan Phillips (West Chester/Fenwick) scored his
first goal of the season, off of an Alex Van der Sluijs
(Dayton/Carroll) assist. Bethany cut the deficit to one when Jon
Zervos scored an unassisted goal, which was the last goal of the
first half.
The Quakers
scored back-to-back goals in the second half when Chad Garman
(Dayton/Chaminade-Julienne) scored on an Eric Schultz
(Cincinnati/Anderson) assist before Alex Van der Sluijs scored a
goal on a Benedict assist, with the pair of goals coming just two
and a half minutes apart. Greg Staten (Mason/Mason) rounded out the
scoring in the game when he converted a penalty kick with 11 minutes
to play in the game, giving the game its 5-1 final score.
Justin Saylor
(Cleveland Heights/Cleveland Heights) was in goal for the first half,
picking up the win, while Paulo Dos Santos picked up the loss
for the
hosts.
With the win,
the Quakers improve to 7-1-1 on the season while Bethany evens their
record to 4-4 on the season.
The Quakers
take a week off of games, as their next contest is on Saturday,
October 2 when the team travels to Otterbein to face off against the
Cardinals with kickoff set for 2:00 p.m.
