Springfield, OH (September 24, 2003) -- The Wilmington Quakers fell
to 4-5 on the year with an overtime loss to the Tigers of Wittenberg
College on Wednesday.
The two played
to a scoreless first half in the game, with the home team out shooting
the Quakers 8 - 6 in the period. The second half saw a much different
game as both teams came out firing. Wittenberg broke the scoreless
tie with a goal by Matt Berry in the 57th minute of the game. Wilmington
answered back with a goal of their own by freshman Chad Garman (Dayton/Chaminade
Julienne) in the contest's 66th minute. Garman was assisted by David
Benedict (Cincinnati/ North College Hill) on the goal. Ten minutes
later the Quakers went on top as Benedict scored an unassisted goal
in the 75th minute. The goal was his team leading ninth of the year
in eight games. With less than eight minutes left in the game, Quaker
midfielder Ben Hawkins (Springfield/North) was called for a handball
resulting in a penalty kick for the Tigers. Steve Doring connected
on the kick and tied the contest at two, sending the game to overtime.
Overtime lasted
only six minutes, as the home team got the game-winning goal from
Sabastian Missura.
Sophomore goal
keeper Justin Saylor (Cleveland Heights/Cleveland Heights) played
all 96 minutes in goal for the Quakers, recording five saves in
the contest.
The Quakers
