Quakers fall in final minutes to Calvin College

Quakers fall below.500 after 5 games for first time since 1999

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan (September 12, 2003) (WC Press Release) -- For the first time since 1999 the Wilmington College men's soccer team has been below .500 after five games, after a heartbreaking 2-1 loss at Calvin College in the first day of the Cal Bersma Memorial Invitational.

Calvin got on the board first in the game with a goal in the 52nd minute of the game, giving the hosts a 1-0 advantage. The Green and White tied the game in the 84th minute when Derek Van der Sluijs (Dayton/Carroll) found Greg Staten (Mason/Mason) in the box with a lob that Staten headed into the opposing net, tying the game at one. With the game looking like it was going to go into overtime, Calvin's Joel Veldhouse hit a one-time blast past the WC keeper with 1:48 left in the game, giving the hosts the win on their own field.

The loss drops the Quakers to 2-3 on the season, below a .500 winning percentage for the first time since 1999 when the team started 2-4 before winning their next 15 games and eventually losing in the NCAA Tournament. Calvin improves to 2-0-0 on the season with the win.

The next game for the Green and White is slated for Saturday, September 13 when the team will face off against Hope in the second day of the Cal Bersma Memorial Invitational.
