Quakers split
in OAC/NCAC Shootout
Quakers win
first of season in final game
TIFFIN, Ohio
(September 6, 2003) -- The Wilmington College Quaker men's soccer
team split a pair of games over the weekend at the OAC/NCAC shootout
hosted by Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio.
In their first
game the Green and White were downed 4-3 before picking up their
first victory of the season in a 4-2 afternoon win. In the first
game the team scored the first two goals of the game when Eric Schoutz
(Cincinnati/Anderson) took a Ben Williams (Ft. Thomas, KY/Newport
Central Catholic) pass and beat the Big Red defender in the 11th
minute of the game. A minute and a half later the Green and White
added their second goal of the game when Ryan Grant (Huber Heights/Wayne)
beat the keeper, taking the Quaker's lead to 2-0 in the game. The
Quakers kept their two-goal lead until the 38th minute when Scott
Vallee scored the first of his two goals on a penalty kick, cutting
the deficit to one at 2-1, which was the score at the end of the
first period.
In the second
half Denison scored just five minutes into period, when Vallee scored
his second goal of the game, knotting the score at two apiece. 11
minutes later the Quakers re-took their lead when Ben Hawkins (Springfield/North)
scored his first goal of the season, giving the Green and White
the 3-2 lead. The lead would be short-lived as Denison tied the
game at three four minutes later, before adding the winning goal
in the 84th minute of the game.
In the second
game Chad Garman (Dayton/Chaminade-Julienne) got the Quakers on
the board in the ninth minute with a goal. After almost 20 minutes
of scoreless play after the inagural goal, the teams swapped four
goals in the next 16 minutes, with the Quakers getting goals from
David Benedict and Ben Williams and Kenyon from Kevin Luby and Hans
Wetzel. The deciding goal came on Williams' shot from a Benedict
pass. The Green and White added an insurance goal in the 60th minute
when Jonas Pettersson (Bergeforsen, Sweden/Timra Gymnasium) scored,
giving the Green and White the two-goal advantage that they would
end the game with.
With the split,
the Quakers record currently stands at 1-2.
The Green and
White next take the pitch on Tuesday, September 9 when they travel
to Delaware, Ohio to face off against Division III powerhouse Ohio
Wesleyan University with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
