Quakers fall to 1-1 with 2-0 loss

Squad falls to tournament host Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — In the second day of the Christopher Newport Tournament, the 13th ranked Wilmington College Quakers fell to host Christopher Newport 2-0, despite out-shooting their opponents 14-8 in the contest.

The teams played to a scoreless first half, as WC picked up six shots to three by CNU. Six minutes into the second half, Kenny Huttman of CNU ended the scoreless tie when he beat the Wilmington keeper, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead. 13 minutes later the hosts tacked on an insurance goal, when Jimmy Majewski scored with just over 25 minutes left on the clock.

The Quakers peppered the goal with six shot attempts after the second goal, but it was to no avail in the 2-0 loss.

Justin Saylor (Cleveland Heights) picked up the loss, stopping one shot while allowing the pair of goals, while his counterpart, Jonathan Anderson, picked up five saves in the shutout. Alex Van der Sluijs (Dayton/Carroll) led the way with three shot attempts, as the Quakers held a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks, and out-fouled their opponents by a 24-20 margin.

With the loss, the Quakers even their record at 1-1 on the year, while Christopher Newport goes to 1-1 with the victory.

The next game for the Green and White is on Wednesday, September 7 when the team travels to Springfield, Ohio to face off against Wittenberg University with kickoff set for 4:00 p.m.
