Quakers tie in physical game

(WC Press Release) WILMINGTON, OH (September 4, 2004) ­ "Wisconsin ­ Osh Kosh is a very good team," said head coach Bud Lewis —this coming after the Quakers and Titans battled through 110 minutes of soccer tonight at Gilhart Field.

It took until the 65th minute of the game for the scoring drought to get rained on, when the Titans' Dan Schmeeckle took a Kevin Murphy pass iand beat the WC keeper. The Quakers answered back when Alex Van der Sluijs (Dayton/Caroll) scored his first career goal off of a penalty kick three minutes later.

The Quakers out-shot the Titans in the first half 8-5, and 17-13 for the game. The two teams were extremely physical combining for 43 fouls and three yellow cards. "From the second half on it was a real dog fight," said Lewis.

The two keepers, Ryan Deneen and Justin Saylor, (Cleveland Heights/Cleveland Heights) each played the full 110 minutes combining for 15 saves.

"There is a lot of things that we can learn from this game," said Lewis.

With the tie the Quakers move to 1-0-1 while the Titans move to 0-1-1 on the year.

The next game for the Quakers for is set for September 7th. The Quakers travel to Cedarville, OH to take on the Yellow Jackets of Cedarville College. The game is slated to start at 8:00 pm.
