WILMINGTON, OH (September 3, 2004) " This is a great way to open
the season," said Bud Lewis after his Quakers defeated The Lords
of Kenyon College in a lopsided 5-0 victory, starting his 30th season
on the sidelines for the Quakers.
The Quakers
scored first, just 8:13 into the game, when Chad
Garman (Dayton/Chaminade-Julienne) hit a rocket shot to the
upper 90, beating the Kenyon goalkeeper. Scoring next for the Quakers,
with his first college goal, was freshmen Phil
Walters (Columbus/Hamilton Twp.). Walters then capped his Quaker
debut with another goal with an assist from Cole
Weddle (Cincinnati/Colerain).
Garman took
a rebound and scored his second goal of the night before David
Benedict (Cincinnati/North College Hill) finished off the scoring
frenzy with an unassisted goal 66:37 into the game.
The Quaker defense
allowed only a mere two shots on goal, while Brandon
Bernhardt (Cincinnati/Anderson) picked up the shutout, the first
of his career.
"At the end
of the game they couldnąt get the ball away from us," said Lewis.
"I think that the ability to keep players fresh and keep coming
at teams is what is going to really be our strength."
The Quakers
next play tomorrow, September 4th when they host the University
of Wisconsin-Osh Kosh. "They are coming off a tough loss and they're
going to be really hungry for a comeback game," said Lewis.
With the win,
the Quakers move to 1-0 on the season, while the Lords fall to 0-2.
