Quakers
drop season opener
Team loses
opening game for first time since 1999
WILMINGTON,
Ohio (August 29, 2003) -- The Wilmington College Quakers were defeated
3-1 in their season opener to Cedarville College on Friday evening.
Cedarville was led by two goals from Jon Waldo.
The Quakers
and Yellow Jackets played to a scoreless tie until halftime, with
both teams getting a total of seven shots in the period.
Under a minute
into the second half, play was postponed for a half-hour due to
lightning. When play resumed, Cedarville needed just over ten minutes
to get their first score of the game when Waldo beat WC goalkeeper
Ken Howard (Xenia/Xenia), off of an Andrew Belleman assist,
giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage. The second goal of the game
came nearly a half-hour later when Grant Knight got a pass from
John Sommer on the left side of the net and then beat the Quaker
goalkeeper far post. The Yellow Jackets got their third and final
goal of the game just two minutes later when Waldo, from a pass
from Joe Zuerner, headed the ball over the hands of the Green and
White keeper, giving the visitors the three goal lead.
The Quakers
got their goal just a minute later when David Benedict (Cincinnati/North
College Hill) beat the Cedarville goalkeeper from the right
side, spoiling the shutout hopes by the visitors from the North.
Freshman Chad
Garman (Dayton/Chaminade-Julienne) had a team-best four shots
while five others had a pair.
The opening
game loss was the Quakers' first since 1999 when the team fell to
Wheaton (IL) in the opening game 2-4.
The Quakers
next take the pitch in a week when the team travels to Tiffin, Ohio
to take part in the OAC/NCAC Shootout, hosted by Heidelberg College.
The Green and White face off against Denison on Friday at 3:00 before
playing Kenyon at 2:00 on Saturday.
