WESTERVILLE – Jalen Jackson recorded a hat trick for the Wilmington College men’s lacrosse team as they fell to Otterbein Tuesday, 25-5, at Memorial Stadium.
It didn’t take long for the Cardinals to find the back of the net, scoring the game’s opening goal 59 seconds into the match. However, Garyck Todd (Pickerington, OH/Central) and Kirby Dearth (Hilliard, OH/Darby) combined on an equalizing goal.
Following a successful clear, Todd found Dearth – who tied the match at one. Unfortunately, Otterbein scored the final eight goals of the quarter. It kicked off a stretch in which the Cardinals scored 17 unanswered goals, spanning the first and third quarters.
Dearth added a second half assist and Jackson (Hilliard, OH/Bradley) scored three times in the second half. Alex Gossard (Galloway, OH/Hilliard Bradley) also scored in the second half, while Zach Swenson (Milford, OH/Milford) recorded an assist.
Jackson, Todd, Austin Johnston (Columbus, OH/Hilliard Bradley) and Branden Ballentine (Pickerington, OH/Central) all had three groundball pickups for the Quakers.
Otterbein dominated the face-offs, winning 81 percent (26-of-32) of the head-to-head matchups. The ability to continually own possessions enabled OC to outshoot Wilmington, 60-13. Additionally, the Cardinals were very efficient, clearing the zone 69 percent (9-of-13) of the time. Meanwhile, Wilmington was just 9-of-22 (41 percent) in its clearing attempts.
Wilmington (4-10) wraps up the season 2 p.m. Saturday as the Quakers host Mount Union at Williams Stadium.
