MEMPHIS, TN – Freshman Jalen Jackson (Hilliard, OH/Bradley) scored three times with one assists, but Wilmington dropped its second straight game – falling to Rhodes, 14-6.
The first quarter looked promising when Jackson gave the Quakers an early 1-0 lead, but Rhodes put away four unanswered goals. Rhodes took a commanding lead deep in to the quarter until Jackson scored again for Wilmington in the waning seconds.
The second quarter brought much of the same as the first with Jackson scoring early and then Rhodes pulling away again with a string of goals giving the Lynx a comfortable cushion on the scoreboard. Kirby Dearth (Hilliard, OH/Darby) added another goal just before halftime for Wilmington as Rhodes finished the half with an 8-4 lead.
“We had a couple of stretches where they scored three in a row and we missed a lot of scoring opportunities that should have been converted to goals,” said head coach Domenic Marzano.
Brian Whitten (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) and Evan Osborne (Middletown, OH/Lebanon) scored early in the third quarter, but it wasn't enough to withstand the offensive onslaught Rhodes had in the second half. The Lynx finished the game with five unanswered goals and pulled away with plenty of insurance goals on the day to guarantee a Rhodes win with a 14-6 final score.
“We actually didn't play poorly,” said Marzano. “We outshot them and just didn't finish our chances. We have to make a few quick fixes, but we are a ready for a full week of practice to get it done.”
The Centenary game scheduled for Sunday afternoon has been cancelled and Wilmington returns to action 4 p.m. March 18 when they host Hope at Williams Stadium.
