Forget
what the pocket calendars would have you believe the
Wilmington College football season begins April 3 at Williams
Stadium.
The
2006 Quakers football team will participate in 14 days of
practices and conclude a month of spring ball with the Spring
Game/Alumni Event April 28.
The
ringing words coming out of the Quakers' camp this spring
are poise, class and character.
"Those
words are very important to us. They are kind of our life
philosophies," WC head coach Barry Wulf said. "Poise
we've got to be able to accept the good things and the bad
things that come our way. Class we want to represent
ourselves, this institution and everything that we stand for
in everything we do, on an off the field. Character
that speaks volumes for who we are. We want to do things the
right way, and poise, class and character; that's what we
want to be about."
Wulf
said spring ball offers an opportunity for former WC players
to get a sneak preview of the upcoming season.
"We
have been very aggressive since I've taken over here with
getting our alumni back into the program and the school, and
we've made great strides," Wulf said. "We've already communicated
to a lot of them that we always want them back and we encourage
them to come back for spring practice. I have an open policy
with all alumni; any time they want to come talk to the team,
it's an open door. This also will benefit our recruiting,
where are off to a great start. This is a great opportunity
for guys to visit our campus and get another chance to see
us in action."
Wulf
said the football played this fall will be the direct result
of the blood, sweat and tears poured out this spring.
"Spring
ball is huge," Wulf said. "Last spring, when we first got
it from the NCAA, we found that it really gave us a jump-start
toward putting our offense, defense and special teams in place.
It really made fall camp last year very good. Now, we get
a chance to emphasize things, get repetitions. It's only going
to make us better and better."
