Quakers fall to John Carroll 20-10

Short leads team with eight catches for 125 yards

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The Wilmington College Quakers fell to 2-4 overall with a 10-20 loss to the Blue Streaks of John Carroll University on Saturday afternoon in University Heights, Ohio.

The Quakers led 3-0 and 10-3 in the game, but were unable to keep their leads en route to their 10-point loss.

Deon Short (Cincinnati/Mt. Healthy) led the team with a season-high eight catches for 125 yards, also a season high, to go with a touchdown in the loss

The Quakers started the game on the right foot, as they drove 75 yards on 12 plays, ending with a Jon Bednarek (Westerville/St. Francis DeSales) 22-yard field goal, giving the team a 3-0 advantage. The Blue Streaks answered with a field goal of their own, from 27 yards away by Dino Zuzic just two seconds before the quarter break, knotting the game at three.

The Quakers took a lead again with 4:05 to play in the half when Cam Marsh (Hillsboro/Hillsboro) found Short in the end zone from seven yards away, giving the visitors a 10-3 lead. John Carroll received the ensuing kickoff and drove 72 yards over six plays, scoring on a Victor DeBoer lateral from seven yards away, knotting the game at 10 before the Blue Streaks picked up a fumble, and five plays later scored the eventual game-winning points on Zuzic’s second field goal of the day, sending the Blue Streaks into the locker room with a 13-10 advantage.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Blue Streaks scored the game’s final points when quarterback Matt Martin found receiver Carter Welo in the end zone from 12-yards away, giving the game its 20-10 final count.

Leading the Quakers on the ground was the tandem of Schuyler Streber (Wilmington/Clinton Massie) and Jermaine Isaac (Eastpointe, MI/Renaissance), who rushed for 28 and 27 yards each in the game. Brandon Oing led the Blue Streak ground attack with 37 yards on 12 carries, as the Quakers held the Blue Streaks to just 60 yards on the ground.

Marsh was 14-of-25 passing in the game for 198 yards and a touchdown, but threw three interceptions in the loss. Martin, the Blue Streak quarterback was 17-of-33 passing for 182 yards and a touchdown, however threw a pair of interceptions himself.

Short led all receivers with his eight-catch, 125-yard performance while Ben West (Springfield/Northeastern) had three catches for 32 yards in the losing effort. Oing and Welo each pulled down a team-high four passes, Oing’s going for 44 yards and Welo’s for 23.

The Quaker defense was led by Jeremy Clingner (Beavercreek/Beavercreek) who had nine tackles, including a sack, forced fumble and fumble recovery. Cory Norvell (Dayton/Dunbar) had seven tackles while Brandon Tisdale (Wilberforce/Xenia) added six stops. John Carroll was paced by four players, Joe Motley, Derrick Bendau, Tim King and McPatrick Coyne, who each had eight tackles.

With the loss, the Quakers fall to 2-4 overall and 2-3 in the OAC while John Carroll evens their record at 3-3 overall and 3-2 in league play.

The next game for the Green and White is on Saturday, October 23 as the team plays host to the Cardinals of Otterbein College with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m.
