Quakers fall to Baldwin-Wallace 31-7

Team holds BW scoreless in second half

(WC Press Release) WILMINGTON, Ohio (September 25, 2004) – The Wilmington College Quakers fell to 1-2 on the season and 1-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference with a 31-7 loss to the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin-Wallace College on Saturday afternoon.

The Quakers gave up 21 points in the first quarter, all within a 43 second span, before giving up 10 points the rest of the game.

Baldwin-Wallace (3-0, 2-0 OAC), scored first in the game with 7:14 to play in the game when quarterback Mike DiAngelo connected with Dave Ehrman from 39 yards away, giving them a 7-0 lead. On the next play from scrimmage for the Quakers, quarterback Cam Marsh (Hillsboro/Hillsboro) scrambled out of the pocket, but was hit from behind and fumbled the ball, giving the Yellow Jackets their first turnover recovery in the game. On the very next play, Baldwin-Wallace used a reverse-pass as Tom Murphy found Scott Kovelan open in the end zone from 26 yards away, giving the visitors a 14-0 lead. After a kickoff return, Marsh was picked off by Jake Knipp on the 40 yardline and promptly returned the interception for a score, capping off a 21-point 43 second span.

The Yellow Jackets increased their lead to 28-0 when DiAngelo found Nate Wilder for his second of two touchdown passes before the Yellow Jackets kicked a field goal with 35 seconds to play in the first half, sending the visitors into the locker room with a 31-0 advantage.

The Quakers never let down in the second half, holding the Yellow Jackets scoreless while adding a touchdown with 3:59 to play in the game when the Green and White ran a reverse pass for a touchdown when Brent Scherz (Wilmington/Clinton Massie) found Deon Short (Cincinnati/Mt. Healthy) for a 57-yard touchdown, eliminating the shutout for the Yellow Jackets.

Jermaine Isaac (Eastpoint, MI/Renaissance) led the Quaker rushing attack with 43 yards on 18 carries while Schuyler Streber (Wilmington/East Clinton) rushed for 19 yards on two carries. Brandon Hedges was held to below one hundred yards for the first time on the year, as he rushed for 63 yards on 15 carries while Ashraf Khatib accumulated 28 yards on seven attempts.

Marsh was 7-of-18 passing in the game for 55 yards while Baldwin-Wallace quarterback Mike DiAngelo was 17-of-30 passing for 237 yards and a pair of scores.

Leading the Quaker receiving corps was Short, who hauled in three passes for a game-high 70 yards, while Scherz and Isaac each had two receptions for 28 and 14 yards apiece. The Yellow Jackets completed passes to 10 different receivers, with David Peterson hauling in a team-high four passes while Gary Kopchak had there catches for a team-high 57 yards.

The Quaker defense was led by Cory Novell (Dayton/Dunbar) and Jeremy Clingner (Beavercreek/Beavercreek) who each had a dozen tackles on the game, while Mark Lane (West Milton/Milton-Union) and Tyler Randles (Cambridge/John Glenn) each had nine stops. The Yellow Jackets were led by Joe George who had seven tackles, while Ryan Lewis had six tackles, including a pair of quarterback sacks.

The next game for the Quakers is on Saturday, October 2 when the team hosts Heidelberg with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m. in the homecoming game for the Green and White.
