(WC Press Release) NEW CONCORD, Ohio – Wilmington College head football coach Phil Dorn picked up the first victory of his young head coaching career with a dominating 17-5 victory over conference rival Muskingum College on Saturday.

Jon Bednarek
"This is a great feeling, I am happy for our guys," said Dorn. The kids have put in a lot of hard work over the past few weeks. We pushed ourselves very hard and this wins shows that the hard work we have put in — showing how far we have come as a football team."

The Quakers found themselves in a 3-0 hole after the Muskies took advantage of a Quaker turnover, as the hosts used an interception on the WC 13-yardline to give them a 28-yard field goal, giving them the early lead. The three-point advantage stayed until the beginning of the second quarter when sophomore kicker Jon Bednarek (Westerville/St. Francis DeSales) kicked a school-record 51-yard field goal to knot the game at three apiece, which stood going into halftime.

The Quakers came out firing in their first drive of the second half as the team drove 77 yards on five plays capped off by a seven-yard Jermaine Isaac (Eastpoint, MI/Renaissance) touchdown, giving the team a 10-3 lead that they would not give up for the remainder of the game.

The Quakers added to their lead in the fourth quarter when quarterback Cam Marsh (Hillsboro/Hillsboro) scampered in from three years away, with a Bednarek extra point giving the team the last of their 17 points in the game.

Muskingum added a safety late in the game when, on a punt, the snap went over punter Drew Springer’s (Clayton/Northmont) head, giving the game its 175 final score.

Defense was the story of the game for the Quakers, as the team held the Muskies to negative eight yards rushing – which is the second best single-game total in WC history – and 87 total yards in the game – the third best total in program history. The defense racked up seven quarterback sacks, six pass breakups, 14 tackles for loss and three interceptions – two by Chad Otte (Maria Stein/Marion Local).

"Our defense was great today," said the head coach. "Our defensive coaches called a great game and they came through today. However, these kids really worked hard and deserve all the credit."

Offensively the team was led by Marsh, who was 17-of-26 passing for 157 yards, while Muskingum quarterback Steve Raymond was 8-of-21 and Josh Lowry was 2-of-14 as the two combined for 95 yards.

The rushing attack was led by Isaac, who rushed for 55 yards and a touchdown, while Marque Jones (Wilmington/Wilmington) rushed once for 51 yards on a reverse that set up the Isaac score. Muskingum was led on the ground by Trevor Cooper who had seven yards on 17 carries while the remainder of the team had nine carries for negative 15 yards.

Marsh spread his 17 completions among six receivers, as Isaac and Deon Short (Cincinnati/Mt. Healthy) each had five catches for 56 and 41 yards respectively. Andy Weiss of Muskingum led the hosts with four catches and 42 yards.

The Quaker defense was paced by Cory Norvell (Dayton/Dunbar) and Jeff Jenkins (Bellbrook/Bellbrook) who each had nine tackles. Marcus Hefner (Crestline/Crestline) had a team-high four tackles for loss and two sacks as he and Tyler Webb (Wilmington/Clinton-Massie) each had seven stops on the game. Todd Filtz of Muskingum had 16 stops in the game while teammate Brandon Clum picked up seven tackles.

With the win, the Quakers even their record to 1-1 on the season and 1-0 in the OAC while Muskingum falls to 0-2 and 0-1 in league action.

The next game for the Green and White is on Saturday, September 25 as the team hosts the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin-Wallace College with kick-off set for 1:30 p.m.
