(WC Press Release) DELHI, Ohio (September 4, 2004) – In the first ever game at the newly built Schueler Field, the Wilmington College Quakers (0-1) were unable to pick up a win, as the Green and White fell to the Lions of Mt. St. Joseph (1-0) by a 21-10 score.

The game was a big one for a pair of wide receivers, as freshman Marque Jones (Wilmington/Wilmington) hauled in three passes for 114 yards, all in the first half, while MSJ receiver Andy Wellendorf hauled in a school-record 11 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns from eight and 10 yards away.

“We’ve got a ways to go,” said head coach Phil Dorn. “We do have some bright spots. Marque Jones is a playmaker, as is Deon Short. You have to give Mt. St. Joseph some credit. They played great defense in the second half and took us out of our game.”

Neither the Quakers nor the Lions were able to move the ball in their first two possessions before the Quakers, on their third time with the ball, drove 43 yards on eight plays, culminating with a 29-yard field goal by kicker Jon Bednarek (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales), which ended a 22- game drought without a made field goal for the Quakers.

The Quakers found the scoreboard again in the first half, this time when quarterback Cam Marsh (Hillsboro/Hillsboro) connected with Jones on a 77-yard score, giving the visitors a 10-0 lead that they took into halftime.

Jermaine Isaac

The Lions came out in the second half and scored three touchdowns in their first five possessions, two by receiver Wellendorf and one on a one-yard Mike Lovell rush with the last score, Wellendorf’s 10-yard reception, coming with 1:20 to play in the third period. Neither team was able to find the end zone the rest of the way, as the Lions came out the victors in a 21-10 game.

Leading the way for the Quaker rushers was freshman Jermaine Isaac (Eastpointe, MI/Renaissance), who rushed 14 times for 44 net yards while quarterback Chad Otte (Maria Stein/Marion Local) rushed three times for five yards. The MSJ rushing attack was led by Lovell who had 59 yards on 18 rushes while Ricky Story, who rushed for over 200 yards a year ago, had just 30 on seven second-half carries.

The passing attack for the Quakers was led by Marsh who was 10-of-15 passing for 163 yards and a touchdown, while Bryan Hamrock of the Lions was 22-of-29 for 299 yards and a pair of touchdown passes.

The receiving corps were led by Jones who had his three catches and first-ever 100-yard receiving game, while Damien Ivory (Cleveland/JFK) and Tom Horne (Wilmington/Wilmington) each had three catches for 30 and 13 yards each. Wellendorf had 11 of his team’s 22 catches for 252 of the team’s 299 receiving yards.

Pre-season All-American Brandon Tisdale (Wilberforce/Xenia) led the defense with nine tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a quarterback sack, while Cory Norvell (Dayton/Dunbar) and Elliott Ward (Plain City/Fairbanks) each had eight stops. MSJ was led by Andrew Ackerman who had 13 tackles and 1.5 sacks, while Matt Lawless had ten tackles and 1.5 sacks.

“We need to play with more consistency,” said the first year coach. “We’re young, and we have to continue to work and try to get better.”

The next game for the Green and White is on Saturday, September 18 as the team travels to New Concord, Ohio to face off against the Muskies of Muskingum College with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m.
