Mike
Wallace resigns as head football coach at Wilmington College
Wilmington
native to take Athletics Director position at Wilmington High School
(FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE)WILMINGTON, Ohio (April 1, 2004) -- For the first
time in 13 years, the Wilmington College football team will have
a new coach, as Mike Wallace has taken the Athletics Director position
at Wilmington High School.
"It is an exciting thing," commented Mike Wallace about his new
position. "I get a chance to get a program, and hopefully take it
to new heights. I think it is one where there is a lot of opportunity
for advancement."
Wallace
has spent the prior 13 season with the Green and White, compiling
a career record of 53-74, with his teams being part of three different
conferences, the American Mid-East Conference (AMC), the Heatland
Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) and WC's current affiliation,
the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC).

"It
is always tough to lose someone like Mike," commented Wilmington
College Athletics Director Terry Rupert. "Mike is a first-class
individual and a first-class coach. We thank him for his 13 years
with the school, and wish him the best of luck with his new career."
His
53 career wins stands as the second highest career total in program
history, while his 13 years also stands as the second longest tenure.
"Wilmington
College has treated me very well," said the former head coach. "They
have afforded me an opportunity to do something that I love, and
that is coaching football. I am very much indebted to Dan DiBiasio
(WC President) and Terry Rupert for allowing me the chance to make
this the best football team that I could."
Wallace's
top season came in 1999, when his team finished the season 9-1,
and narrowly missed a berth into the NCAA Tournament.
"In
my 13 years, we have turned the program from the depths of the bottom
of the drudges to the tops of the mountains, and everywhere in between,"
said Wallace. "I think we have reached a lot of goals that we were
trying to reach."
During
his tenure his teams have set nine different offensive school records,
including total offense, passing yards, passing touchdowns, total
touchdowns and PAT attempts.
"There is no question that I will miss the personal relationship
with the players," commented Wallace on what he will miss most about
coaching. "There is nothing like the game of football that keeps
the personal experience there. It is something you cannot duplicate."
Wilmington
College will start a nation-wide search starting next week to fill
the position of Head Coach.
