AUSTINTOWN – Wilmington College basketball players LeAnn Topp and Malcolm Heard II were named Ohio Athletic Conference Players of the Week in the respective sports, the league announced today (January 28, 2013).

Topp (New Bremen, OH/New Bremen) helped the Lady Quakers to a 2-0 week with back-to-back double-doubles. She started the week with 16 points and 12 rebounds in WC’s 71-57 victory over Muskingum. Then, registered 16 points and 11 boards in Saturday’s Heidelberg win. In the victory over the Student Princes, the senior forward keyed the game-deciding run 15-4 with seven of the team’s 15 points.

“It’s a very deserving honor for her,” said head coach Jerry Scheve. “She made big plays for us in both games. She has played well all year and has been a leader for us, on and off the court.”

She is the first WC women’s basketball player since Olivia Watters in the 2010-11 season to earn the conference’s weekly award.

Heard (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) becomes the second men’s player this season to earn the OAC honor. Dwight Johnson (Dayton, OH/Jefferson) picked up the award two weeks ago.

The junior forward averaged 22.0 points and 9.0 rebounds as Wilmington went 2-0, beating Muskingum and avenging an early season loss to Heidelberg. He recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 23 points and 10 rebounds in Saturday’s victory over the Student Princes. The Fightin’ Quakers are unbeaten in those five games.

On the season, he leads the team with 7.1 rebounds and is second with 14.8 points.

“It was a great week for Malcolm and a great week for the team,” said head coach K.C. Hunt. “He was a big part of us going 2-0 this week. I would like to see continued efforts on the glass and to continue attacking the basket.”

Both teams face Capital 7:30 p.m. Wednesday with the men’s hosting the Crusaders in the team’s “Green Swarm Night”. All fans in attendance are encouraged to wear green to the game. The women travel to Bexley for a key OAC game.
