Quakers fall to 15th ranked Blue Streaks

David Guy leads squad with 17 points

(WC Press Release) Wilmington, OH (December 20, 2003) -- The Wilmington College Quakers fell to a strong John Carroll squad 85-68 on Saturday in Ohio Athletic Conference action.

David Guy (Webb City, MO/Webb City) led the way for the Quakers with 17 points, as Tyran Thompson (Middletown/Middletown) and Deon Short (Cincinnati/Mt. Healthy) each scored 14 points in the loss.

The Quakers, who never led in the game, fell behind 7-0 two minutes into the half before the team fought back and cut the deficit to two a minute later. The game remained in single digits until the 7:21 mark in the first half when the lead grew to 11. JCU led by as many as 13 in the half, as the Quakers cut the deficit to nine by intermission.

In the second half the Quakers cut the deficit to six twice, but that would be as close as the Green and White would come, as the Blue Streaks took their largest lead of the game at the final buzzer when David Gibbons followed up his own missed layup, giving JCU the 17-point win.

Guy led the Quaker scorers with 17 points while Short and Thompson each scored 14. Mike Umpleby (Columbus/Centenniel) scored nine, as Stephen Gee (West Milton/Milton-Union) pulled down a team-best six rebounds. Guy had five boards and Short four, as Thompson dished out four assists to lead the squad.

Gibbons led four Blue Streaks in double figure scoring with 20 points while Jerry Angel scored 14, Matthew Moran 11 and Andrew Salata 10. Salata pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, as the Blue Streaks out-rebounded the Quakers 42-24 in the contest.

With the loss the Quakers fall to 1-8 overall and 1-3 in the OAC while JCU improves to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in conference action.

The Quakers' next tip-off against Maryville (TN) on January 3, in Maryville, Tennessee with tip-off set for 2:00 p.m.
