Quakers win
first of season
Wilmington,
OH (December 11, 2002) -- The Quakers of Wilmington College snapped
a nine-game losing streak with a 61-58 thrilling victory over Ohio
Northern University.
David Guy (Webb
City, MO/Webb City) scored 18 points, including nine straight in
just under two minutes to help the Quakers gain a lead that they
would not relinquish.
ONU (1-4, 0-2
OAC)) started the game strong, jumping out to a 12-2 lead just five
minutes into the contest. The Quakers then outscored the Polar bears
17-7 over the next seven minutes to tie the game at 19. ONU responded
with a 12-2 run to re-capture the double-digit advantage. The Green
and White hit a three-point basket with a minute remaining and went
into the locker room trailing by eight at 31-24.
ONU took an
eight point lead with 19:33 left in the game before Wilmington (1-4,
1-1 OAC) went on a 15-0 run over the next seven minutes to take
a seven point. The Polar Bears tied the game at 41 with 7:09 left
in the contest before Guy took over, as he scored nine of the team's
next 13 points off of a pair of three point baskets and a converted
three-point play to help the team open an 11-point lead. The lead
would grow to as high as 12 with 1:11 left in the game, before Ohio
Northern's Aaron Fries hit four three-point baskets over the remaining
minute, including one at the buzzer, that helped ONU fight back
to within three at the end of the game.
Guy led the
Quaker scorers with 18 points while Adam Weber (Peebles/Peebles)
chipped in with 11 and Greg Liggens (Toledo/Scott) and Dave Hudson
(Bucyrus/Col. Crawford) each scored eight. Liggens grabbed a team-leading
seven rebounds while Weber pulled down six.
ONU was led
by Fries, who ended the game with 30 points, on 10-of-20 shooting
from beyond the three-point arc. Jim Conrad scored 12 for the visitors
from Ada as Sam Mikolajewski had 12 rebounds.
The next game
for the Green and White is set for Saturday, December 14 as the
team plays host to the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin-Wallace College
with tip-off set for 3:00 p.m.
