Quakers fall in shootout 95-94

Deon Short scores a career-high 22 points in loss

(WC Press Release) Berea, OH (December 13, 2003) -- The Wilmington College Quakers fell to the Baldwin-Wallace Yellow Jackets in a shootout on Saturday by a 95-94 count.

The Quakers shot a blistering 59.4 percent on three-point baskets, including an amazing 12-of-17 in the second half, a shooting percentage of 70.6 in the period.

Deon Short (Cincinnati/Mt. Healthy) led five Quakers in double figures with a career-high 22 points as two others, Tyran Thompson (Middletown/Middletown) and Mike Umpleby (Columbus/Beechcroft) also reached career highs in scoring.

The Quakers never led in the first half, as the Yellow Jackets opened the game with a 14-5 run onver the first five minutes of the contest. The lead grew to double digits on three different occasions, but the Quakers clawed their way back, and tied the game at 36 with four minutes to play in the period. B-W ended the half on a 7-2 run to take a five-point lead into the locker room.

The Quakers and Yellow Jackets fought back and forth in the first five minutes of the second half, before the Green and White took their first lead of the game with just under 14 minutes to play on a Thompson rebound layup. B-W came back and took an eight point lead with eight and a half minutes in the game before the Quakers once again fought back and went on a 13-2 run to take a six-point lead with four minutes in the game. After the Quakers' lead grew to as many as seven with 2:34 to play, the Yellow Jackets scored ten of the last 12 points in the game, as the hosts hit a lay-up with four seconds remaining to take the one-point conference victory.

Short scored a career-high 22 points on 8-of-9 shooting and 4-of-4 from three-point range in the game. David Guy (Webb City, MO/Webb City) tied a career-high with 19 points while Thompson (16) and Umpleby (13) each set new career highs in points as Stephen Gee (West Milton/Milton Union) rounded out the five players in double figures with 11.

B.J. Gordon led the way in rebounding for the Quakers, as he pulled down five rebounds while grabbing three steals and tying with Short with four assists to lead the team.

Thad Davis of B-W led all scorers with 24 points as Tom Harrington scored 20, Tori Davis 18, Keith Aufmuth 11 and Matt Marks 10. Davis grabbed 13 rebounds as Harrington dished out eight assists.

With the loss the Quakers fall to 1-6 on the season and 1-2 in the OAC.

The next game for the Green and White is on Tuesday, December 16 when the team travels to Franklin, Indiana to face off against the Grizzlies in a non-conference match-up with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m.
