Quakers fall to Heidelberg 87-63

Deon Short leads way with 19 points in loss

(WC Press Release) Tiffin, Ohio (February 21, 2004) -- The Wilmington College Quakers fell to the Heidelberg Student Princes on Saturday afternoon by an 87-63 score.

The Quakers were led by junior Deon Short (Cincinnati/Mt. Healthy), who scored 19 points in the losing effort.

The Quakers jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead on a pair of B.J. Gordon (Toledo/Scott) field goals, before Heidelberg opened a 13-3 run to take a seven-point lead and never trailed the rest of the way. The first half deficit grew to as many as 13, as the Quakers cut the Student Princes lead to 11 at the halftime break.

The Green and White cut the second half deficit to nine with 17:21 to play before the hosts opened a 22-5 run to take a 68-42 lead, and cruised the rest of the way in the 24-point victory.

Short led the way for the Green and White with 19 points while Mark Waddle (Springfield/Southeastern) scored nine and Gordon scored eight. Short led the team with six rebounds.

Heidelberg was led by Lucas Messer, who scored 26 points and became Heidelberg's all-time leading scorer in the process. Kenny Gilbert scored 15 while Andy Carter and Nolan Edwards scored 14 and 10 respectively.

With the loss the Quakers fall to 1-24 on the season and 1-17 in the OAC while Heidelberg improves to 5-20 overall and 3-15 in league action.

The next game for the Green and White is on Monday, February 23 when the team travels to New Concord, Ohio to face off against the Muskies of Muskingum College in the first round of the OAC Tournament.
