Quakers
use smothering defense in 23-point win
WILMINGTON,
Ohio (February 1, 2003) The Quakers of Wilmington College allowed
just 12 second half points and 34 total as the Green and White snapped
a seven-game losing skid with a 57-34 victory over Marietta College.
The 34 points allowed is a new school record for fewest points allowed
in a single game. The Pioneers shot just 22.6 percent (12-of-53)
from the field in the game while the Quakers shot a torrid 57.5%
(23-of-40) in the game.
Marietta (7-12,
3-9 OAC) scored first in the game when Dan Richards hit a layup
just 15 seconds into the game. The Quakers then scored seven straight
points, opening a lead that they would not relinquish until late
in the half. The lead for the Green and White grew to as many as
10 with 10:24 left in the half before Marietta went on a 16-4 run
to take a two-point lead with 2:29 remaining in the half. Adam Weber
(Peebles/Peebles) scored the last four points of the period, giving
the Quakers a 24-22 lead going into halftime.
Wilmington (4-15,
2-10) used a 7-0 run after a Marietta basket to take a seven point
lead just three minutes into the period, as the Green and White
never looked back outscoring the Pioneers 33-12 in the second stanza.
The Quakers
were led by Greg Liggens (Toledo/Scott) and Davd Guy (Webb City,
MO/Webb City) who scored 11 points each. Webber and Deon Short (Cincinnati/Mt.
Healthy) each scored nine as Will Bruce (Cleveland/Benedictine)
chipped in eight. Bruce grabbed a game-high ten rebounds as the
Quakers out-rebounded their opponent 40-18 in the game. Short was
the team leader in assists with four in the contest.
The Pioneers
did not put a player in double figures, and were led by Cody Lanešs
nine points. Dan Richards scored eight while Brett Atherton scored
six. Jason Collier, Lane and Thad Skinner each grabbed three rebounds
for the Pioneers while Matt Hines, Lane and Richards gave out a
pair of assists.
The next game
for the Green and White is set for Wednesday, February 5 when the
team travels to Bexley, Ohio to face off against nationally ranked
Capital University with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
