Quakers unable to overcome sluggish first half

MARIETTA, Ohio (January 18, 2003) ­ The Quakers of Willmington College were unable to overcome an 18-point halftime deficit as the Green and White ended up on the wrong side of a 71-40 score.

Wilmington (3-12, 1-7 OAC) trailed the Pioneers by one at 3-2 before the hosts went on a 15-2 run, giving Marietta an 18-4, 14-point lead. The Quakers fought back, and cut the deficit to eight with 5:21 left before Marietta ended the half on a 14-4 run, ending the half up by 18 at 34-16.

The Quakers fought back in the second half, cutting the deficit to just nine, 44-35, with 9:28 left in the game before Marietta (7-8, 3-5 OAC) ended the game on a 27-5 run, giving the hosts a 31-point victory.

The Quakers were led by Adam Weber (Peebles/Peebles) who scored nine points, while Stephen Gee (West Milton/Milton-Union) scoerd eight Will Bruce (Cleveland/Benedictine) chipped in with five. Greg Liggens (Toledo/Scott) pulled down a game-high eight rebounds while Bruce helped out with seven boards. Dave Hudson (Bucyrus/Col. Crawford) dished out four assists in the loss to lead the team.

Marietta was led by Dan Richards who scored 15 points as Thad Skinner chipped in with 13. Richards pulled down a team-high five rebounds while Richards also led the team in assists with five.

The next game for the Green and White is set for Wednesday, January 22 when the Quakers play host to the 20th ranked Capital Crusaders with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
