fall in overtime thriller 91-87

Press Release) Wilmington, OH (January 17, 2004) -- The Wilmington
College Quakers trailed by 10
at halftime and fought their way back to tie the game at the end
of regulation. The extra stanza was not kind to the Quakers' shooters
as they hit just 4 of 11 shots in overtime before falling to Marietta
91-87.
David
Guy (Webb City, MO, Webb City) led the way with 20 points, as four
others scored double figures in the contest.
The
Quakers jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the first four minutes
of the game before Marietta went on an 18-5 run to take a seven-point
lead with eight and a half minutes to play. The Pioneers increased
their lead to as many as 12 with 2:17 to play, as the Green and
White went into the locker room trailing by 10 at 35-25.
The
Marietta lead grew to as many as 13 in the second half before the
Quakers started to inch their way back into the game. With 3:16
left in the game, the hosts trailed by seven. 72-65, before they
went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 72 on a Deon Short (Cincinnati/Mount
Healthy) put-back with 0.5 seconds left on the clock, sending the
game to the extra period.
In
overtime, the Quakers fell behind by five with 1:41 left before
they went on a 5-0 run to tie the game at 84, less than a half a
minute later. Marietta then hit four straight from the line, before
the Green and White cut the deficit to one with 16 ticks left on
the clock. The Pioneers proceeded to hit three of four free throws
down the stretch, ending the Quakers' hopes of a victory.
Guy
led the way for the Quakers with 20 points while Short scored 18,
Tyran Thompson (Middletown/Middletown) scored 16, Josh Rohrbacher
(Columbus/Beechcroft) 12 and Stephen Gee (West Milton/Milton Union)
10. Gee pulled down a team-best seven rebounds, while Rohrbacher
dished out three assists.
Marietta
had just three players in double figures but each scored 20 or more,
led my Mat Hines' 24 points. Cody Lane and Scott Laslo each scored
22 while Laslo had a tam-best eight rebounds and five assists.
With
the loss, the Quakers fall to 1-13 overall and 1-7 in conference
action while Marietta improves to 7-8 and 2-6 in OAC play.
The
next game for the Quakers is on Monday, January 19 when WC hosts
the 2004 Quaker Bowl against Earlham College with tip-off set for
7:30 p.m.
