Quakers increase win streak to five with eight-point win

Short and Stirling each score 20 points in victory

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College Quakers started the 2005 calendar year in strong fashion, defeating Maryville (TN) College by an 80-72 count. Two Quakers, Deon Short (Cincinnati/Mt. Healthy) and Eric Stirling (Brooklyn, NY/LaSalle Academy) scored 22 and 20 points respectively.

The Scots of Maryville scored first in the game, and held a 4-2 lead two minutes into the contest before the Quakers went on a 9-0 run, increasing the team’s lead to seven. The first-half lead grew to as many 14 with 1:47 to play in the half before the visitors closed to within 12 heading into the locker room.

The Quakers opened the second half strong, increasing their lead to 19 with 17:14 to play before the visitors opened a 14-2 run, cutting the deficit to seven with 14:11 to play. The visitors would close to within three with 1:35 to play in the game, but that would be as close as they would come, as the Quakers ended the game on a 5-0 run, giving the game its eight-point margin at 80-72.

Short and Stirling scored 22 and 20 points each while David Guy (Webb City, MO/Webb City) added 12 and Zach Broermann (Brookville, IN/Franklin County) and Josh Rohrbacher (Columbus/Centennial) each scored six. Stirling pulled down a game-high nine rebounds while Short and Guy each grabbed six. Stirling and Billy Nelson (Cincinnati/Shroder Paideia Academy) each had a half-dozen assists.

Maryville was led by Bobby Golden, who had 18 points and eight rebounds while Raul Placeres and Sidney Ellis each scored 13 points, with Ellis dishing out six assists.

With the win, the Quakers improve to 7-4 on the season while Maryville falls to 7-4.

The next game for the Green and White is on Wednesday, January 5 as the team plays host to the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m. in Fred Raizk Arena.
