Defensive miscues were costly as Wilmington College dropped both ends of an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Mount Union Sunday afternoon.

The Purple Streaks won the opener, 13-1, and finished the sweep with an 18-8 win in game two.

Wilmington is now 3-13 in the OAC, 7-25 overall. Mount Union moves to 12-4 in the conference, 26-10 for the season.

In the opener, four of Mount Union’s first five runs were unearned as the Raiders took advantage of Wilmington errors. For the game, the Quakers committed four errors that led to five unearned runs.

The Quakers’ offense managed just four hits off Mount Union pitching. Bruce Dunlap (Circleville/Logan Elm) singled and doubled.

In game two, Mount Union took a 12-0 lead after five innings without the benefit of an earned run as Wilmington committed four errors in the field. The big frame was the 10-run fifth that was aided by three Wilmington miscues.

“We just didn’t glove it,” Wilmington head coach Tony Haley said. “We did some things well today at the plate, but this game is all about pitching and defense. Our defense just didn’t get it done.”

Wilmington’s bats came alive in the nightcap.

Austin Newman (Bethel/Bethel-Tate) went 4-for-5 to raise his batting average to .336. The senior shortstop drove in two runs and scored three times.

Jake Vinkovich (Circleville) had season-high three hits and scored a run.

Brett McEvoy (Pickerington/Pickerington North) and Luke Teeters (Waverly) had two hits and an RBI each as Wilmington put 15 hits in the book.

Wilmington will close its season at home May 4 when top-ranked Marietta visits Tewksbury-Delaney Field for an OAC doubleheader.
