Wilmington College dropped both ends of an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader to Capital University at Tewksbury-Delaney Field Sunday afternoon.

The Crusaders rallied to win the opener, 7-6, in eight innings and pounded the Quakers, 21-0, in game two.

Wilmington is now 3-11 in the OAC, 6-21 overall. Capital improves to 3-10 in the conference, 14-18 for the season.

“It was a tough day. We didn’t play well in the first game, but we still gave ourselves a great chance to win,” Wilmington head coach Tony Haley said. “We didn’t do the little things necessary to get that win.”

In the opener, the Quakers climbed out of a 4-0 hole to tie the game with four runs in the third inning.

Brandon Arehart (Wilmington), Bruce Dunlap (Circleville/Logan Elm) and Hunter Justus (Circleville/Logan Elm) drove in runs for Wilmington.

The Quakers went up, 6-4, in the fourth inning when Brett McEvoy (Pickerington/Pickerington North) ripped a two-run homer to left field.

Wilmington’s defense opened the door for the Crusaders as Capital scored unearned runs in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game at 6.

Capital scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the top of the eighth — a mini-rally that happened with two outs. A hit batter, stolen base and single to left field put the Crusaders up, 7-6.

Wilmington went out in order in the home eighth.

Hunter Justus pitched well, allowing three earned runs in five innings.

In game two, Capital scored in every inning but the second en route to finishing the sweep.

The Quakers managed just four hits off Capital starter Garrett Griffin, but appeared to have something brewing in the home seventh when Austin Newman (Bethel/Bethel-Tate) and Alex Finney (Crestline/Buckeye Central) notched back-to-back singles. The Crusaders, though, kept Wilmington off the board with a game-ending triple play.
