TIFFIN — Wilmington College dropped both ends of an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader to Heidelberg Saturday afternoon.

The Berg took game one, 7-0, and finished the sweep with a 5-1 win in game two.

Wilmington is 0-2 in the OAC, 3-12 overall. Heidelberg improves to 2-0 in the conference, 13-8 for the season.

“We played much better baseball than we have been playing. We just came up short against a very good Heidelberg team,” Wilmington head coach Tony Haley said. “We’re getting there. We just need to keep practicing hard and playing hard.”

In the opener, Heidelberg scored two runs in the second inning and added five more in the third.

The Quakers were held to four hits — singles from Xavier Jordan (Springfield/Shawnee), Bruce Dunlap (Circleville/Logan Elm), Hunter Justus (Circleville/Logan Elm) and Brandon Arehart (Wilmington).

Game two was a different story in many ways, except the end result.

The Quakers took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Austin Newman (Bethel/Bethel-Tate) drew a two-out walk and came home on a RBI single by Justus.

Wilmington stayed in front until the Berg tied the game with a run in the fourth and took the lead with another run in the fifth.

Heidelberg extended its lead to 5-1 with three more runs in the seventh.

Wilmington had chances to pull closer, but big hits were an elusive commodity.

“We just couldn’t put our hits together,” Haley said. “We had nine hits, but we left 10 runners on base. We would have liked to got a couple big hits, but we still saw a lot of improvement today.”

Newman and Dan Conroy (Columbus/Centennial) had two hits apiece for the Quakers.

Jake Vinkovich (Circleville) pitched well in a losing effort. The junior allowed two earned runs over four innings.

Wilmington is scheduled to host Ohio Wesleyan in a single nine-inning game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
