FORT MYERS, Fla. — For the second straight game, Wilmington College was unable to take advantage of strong pitching as the Quakers dropped a 3-1 decision to Muhlenberg (Pa.) College in Gene Cusic Classic action Thursday.

Wilmington is now 3-3 on the season while Muhlenberg improves to 8-1.

The Quakers took a 1-0 lead when Bruce Dunlap (Circleville/Logan Elm) knocked in a run with a first-inning single. The RBI was Dunlap’s team-leading 11th of the young season.

“Bruce has a plan when he comes to the plate,” Wilmington head coach Tony Haley said. “It’s going to be nice when we get guys on base for him more often, because he takes care of business when there are guys in scoring position.”

Muhlenberg tied the game with a run in the third and took a 2-1 lead in the sixth off Wilmington starter Jared Ramsey (Fairborn). Ramsey went 5 1/3 innings and struck out six.

“Jared established the strike zone early and got ahead of everyone. This is his senior year and he is pitching the way you expect a senior to pitch,” Haley said. “We also brought in a couple freshmen, who looked good.”

First-year hurlers Troy Wagner (Bright, Ind./East Central) and Dan Conroy (Columbus/Centennial) pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and gave up a hit each.

Wilmington will end its Florida trip with a doubleheader against Fredonia State Friday morning. After that, it will be time to head north on Interstate 75 toward the battles that await in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

“If we hit like we are capable of hitting and get the type of pitching we have gotten through six games, we are going to be alright. We just aren’t swinging the bats like we’re capable of swinging them.”
