Quakers end season with split vs. Marietta

(WC Press Release) MARIETTA, Ohio (May 9, 2004) -- The Wilmington College Quaker baseball team ended their 2004 season with a split over 11th ranked Marietta College on Saturday, winning the first game 9-0 before falling 5-3 in the afternoon finale.

In the first game, the 9-0 victory, pitcher Clayton Reynolds (Blanchester/Blanchester) pitched a seven-hit shutout, giving the team the win. Aaron Lawson (Hebron/Lakewood) and Ben Buehner (Germantown/Valley View) were each 3-for-4 with Buehner hitting two home runs and Lawson one, while Chad Abbott (Hillsboro/Hillsboro) was 2-for-4 with a homer.

In the game, the Quakers scored three runs in the first second and fourth innings, giving the team their nine runs in the contest.

In the second game, the Quakers found themselves in a 3-0 hole after the second inning before chipping away at the deficit with a run in the top of the fourth. Marietta scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth, giving them a 5-1 lead before the Quakers cut it to two in the top of the seventh, but it was not enough as the Green and White fell 5-3.

The Quakers were held to three hits in the game, one each by Lawson, Brent Bird (Columbus/Hilliard Darby) and Mike Kroeger (Cincinnati/Elder). Jamison George (Mt. Sterling/Miami Trace) picked up the loss for the Quakers, pitching six innings, allowing just five hits and striking out two.

With the split, the Quakers end their season with a record of 18-17, their third straight season over .500, while sporting a 5-13 record in the OAC. Marietta goes to 30-8 on the year and 15-3 in conference action.
