Quakers win 11-10 thriller in 10 innings

Chad Abbott leads team with pair of home runs

(WC Press Release) WILMINGTON, Ohio (May 7, 2004) -- The Wilmington College Quakers rallied to score two runs in the seventh inning to tie the game and send it to extra innings before the team scored a run in the bottom of the 10th, giving the team their 17th win of the season.

The Lions and Quakers started the game on an offensive tear, with the teams each scoring a run in each of their first three innings, with MSJ holding a 7-5 lead after three innings. After the Quakers held the Lions scoreless for the top of the fourth inning, WC took a one-run lead with a three-run fourth inning, before MSJ rallied and scored three of their own in the top of the fifth.

Mount St. Joseph and Wilmington each played scoreless baseball for the next two innings, as the Quakers rallied in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two runs to tie the game at 10, sending the contest to extra innings.

In the 10th inning, the third extra inning of the game, Chad Abbott (Hillsboro/Hillsboro) knocked in Tyler Kelch (Hillsboro/Hillsboro) with a single down the left field line, giving the Quakers the one-run victory.

Abbott led the way for the team batting 4-for-6 with three runs scored and three runs batted in. Brent Bird (Columbus/Hilliard Darby) Kelch and Ben Buehner (Germantown/Valley View) were each 3-for-5. Burt Cox (Fairborn/Fairborn) pitched four and two-thirds of an inning in relief, picking up his seventh win of the season for the team.

With the victory, the team improves to 17-16 overall while Mt. St. Joseph goes to 18-19 on the season.

The next game for the Green and White is on Saturday, May 8 as the team travels to Marietta, Ohio to face off against the 11th ranked Pioneers starting at 1:00.
