Quakers fall to .500 with loss to Franklin

(WC Press Release) FRANKLIN, Indiana (May 6, 2004) -- The Wilmington College Quakers fell to .500 on the season with a 9-6 loss to the Grizzlies of Franklin College on Wednesday.

The Quakers and Grizzlies played the first two and a half innings in a scoreless tie until the hosts from Indiana erupted with nine runs in the third inning, giving them a commanding 9-0 lead. The Green and White chipped away at the lead with a run in both the fifth and the sixth inning before scoring four in the ninth, but fell three runs short, ending the game trailing by three at 9-6.

The Quakers managed eight hits in the game, two of those off of the bat of Brent Bird (Columbus/Hilliard Darby), who went 2-for-3. Greg Krieger (Bellefontaine/Bellefontaine) knocked in two runs to lead the team, while Bird crossed the plate a team-leading two times. Mike Burkholder (Republic/Seneca East) picked up the loss, dropping his record to 0-2 on the year.

With the loss, the Quakers go to 16-16 on the season, while Franklin improves to 21-16.

The next game for the Green and White is today, as the team plays host to the Lions of Mt. St. Joseph starting at 3:30 p.m.
