Quakers split with Capital

Team scores 11 runs in opening game

(WC Press Release) COLUMBUS, Ohio (May 5, 2004) -- The Wilmington College Quaker baseball team split a double header with Capital University on Tuesday, winning the first game 11-7 before falling 17-7 in the second.

In the first game, the 11-7 victory, the Green and White found themselves down 1-0 after the second inning, before the team put up three runs in the third inning, highlighted by Chad Abbott's (Hillsboro/Hillsboro) two-run double.

The host Crusaders tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning before taking a one run lead in the bottom of the fourth. The Quaker then erupted in the top of the fifth, scoring five runs on Abbott's second two-run double of the game, a Mike Kroeger (Cincinnati/Elder) RBI single, a Jimmy Wolverton (London/Madison Plains) sacrifice fly, and a double steal that saw Kroeger swipe home plate, giving the team the 8-4 lead.

Capital cut the deficit to one with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, before WC answered with three more runs in the top of the seventh, giving the game its 11-7 final score.

Abbott, Ben Buehner (Germantown/Valley View) and Tyler Kelch (Hillsboro/Hillsboro) each went 3-for-4 in the game, while Abbott had four runs batted in. Buehner, Abbott and Aaron Lawson (Hebron/Lakewood) each scored twice in the game. Burt Cox (Fairborn/Fairborn) picked up the win for the Quakers, improving his record to 6-2 on the season, while Jason Berger (Fairfield/Fairfield) picked up his first save of the season.

In the second game, the Quakers started the game with two runs before the Crusaders erupted with five in the bottom of the inning, giving them the 5-2 lead. Capital scored again in the second inning before the Quakers cut the deficit to three. Capital then scored four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, giving them the eventual winning runs of the game, increasing the lead to 10-3. After a two-run inning from the Quakers,

Capital scored five more runs in the bottom of the fifth, increasing the lead to 15-5 before WC and Capital each scored two runs in the sixth, ending the game with the final score 17-7.

Lawson led the team in the second game going 3-for-4, while Mark Caudill (Bellefontaine/Bellefontaine) was 2-for-3. Lawson and Buehner each scored two times, while Brent Bird (Columbus/Hilliard Darby) and Caudill each knocked in a pair of runs. Ronnie Campbell (Mt. Orab/Lynchburg Clay) picked up the loss for the Quakers.

With the split, the team's record goes to 16-15 overall and 4-12 in the OAC while Capital goes to 14-20 overall and 5-9 in league action.

The next game for the Green and White is today at 4:00 as the team faces off against the Grizzlies of Franklin College.
