Quakers drop two to Baldwin-Wallace

Quakers fall to 15-14 on season

(FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE) WILMINGTON, Ohio (May 3, 2004) ­ The Wilmington College Quaker baseball team dropped both games of a double header to conference foe Baldwin-Wallace College on Monday afternoon.

In the first game, an 8-1 loss, the team threatened in the first inning when Aaron Lawson (Hebron/Lakewood) singled and Chad Abbott (Hillsboro/Hillsboro) doubled, but Lawson was called out at home plate attempting to score, ending the inning for the Green and White. The Yellow Jackets proceeded to score three runs in the next half-inning before adding two more runs in the third inning, giving the visitors from Berea the comfortable 5-0 lead.

The Quakers scored their only run of the game in the fourth inning when Mike Kroeger (Cincinnati/Elder) singled in Abbott, cutting the deficit to four at 5-1. The Yellow Jackets then added a run in the sixth, and then two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh, giving them an 8-1 win.

Abbott went 2-for-3 for the Quakers while three others recorded a hit in the game. Clayton Reynolds (Blanchester/Blanchester) picked up the loss for the Green and White, pitching five innings and striking out one.

In the second game, an 11-2 loss, the team fell behind 2-0 after two runs in the top of the second before the Green and White tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third and another in the bottom of the fifth. The Yellow Jackets responded with a suicide squeeze run in the top of the sixth, giving them the winning run in the ball game. BW exploded in the seventh inning, scoring eight runs, giving the game its 11-2 final score.

Tyler Kelch (Hillsboro/Hillsboro) was 2-for-2 for the Quakers in the game, while Brent Bird was 1-for-3, getting the teamıs only other hit. Jimmy Wolverton (London/Madison Plains) scored both runs for the Green and White, off of a Kelch sacrifice fly, and a Greg Krieger (Bellefontaine/Bellefontaine) sacrifice squeeze. Jamison George (Mt. Sterling/Miami Trace) picked up the loss for the Green and White, pitching six and one third of an inning, allowing three earned runs while striking out eight.

With the pair of losses, the team falls to 15-14 overall and 3-11 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while Baldwin-Wallace improves to 18-12, and 5-10 in league games.

The next game for the Green and White is tomorrow, May 4, as the team travels to Bexley, Ohio to face off against the Crusaders of Capital University starting at 1:00.
