JOE UNMASKED ... There is some uncertainty whether Wilmington catcher Joe Schmetzer has dry lips or is responding to the "tools of ignorance" label hung around catching equipment.

AMELIA — Wilmington College's bats remained quiet Monday as the Quakers dropped a 5-1 non-conference game to Mount Saint Joseph at Midland Field.

The loss is the fourth straight for the Quakers, who are now 13-15 on the season. The Lions are 23-13 for the spring.

"It was the same old song — good pitching, good defense and no hitting," WC head coach Tony Haley said.

Taylor Clark (Morrow/McCallie, Tenn.) had two doubles to lead Wilmington's six-hit offense. The junior center fielder gave the Quakers a 1-0 lead with a run-scoring two-bagger in the third, but the Mount scored twice in the home third to take a 2-1 advantage.

Wilmington's best chance to do some serious damage came in the fourth inning when the Quakers loaded the bases with no outs. Wilmington, though, came up empty-handed when the Lions turned a fly ball to left into a double play, then got a fly out to right to end the Quakers' threat.

Wilmington's pitching staff turned in another solid performance. Haley singled out the efforts of sophomore Scott Ensell (Steubenville) and freshman Chris Lewis (Ostrander/Buckeye Valley), who pitched 3.2 innings each.

"Some guys who haven't pitched in a while got a chance and they did a good job," Haley said. "Scott and Chris both pitched well. Scott walked six, but otherwise pitched a good game. Chris pitched really well. He just ran out of gas in the eighth inning, when they scored two more runs."

The Quakers are at Capital Tuesday for a 1 p.m. Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader.
