ADA — Pitching was the dominant force Wednesday as Wilmington College split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Ohio Northern.

Junior Jamison George (Mount Sterling/Miami Trace) fired a three-hitter as the Quakers took game one, 1-0. In game two, Wilmington was held to three hits as the Polar Bears posted a 3-1 win.

Wilmington is now 5-7 in OAC play, 13-12 overall while ONU is 1-11 and 5-27.

"If someone would have told me that we would come up here and have eight hits in two games, I wouldn't have believed it," WC head coach Tony Haley said. "Our pitching was outstanding and our hitting was horrendous."

George struck out eight, walked one and threw only 67 pitches to turn in his best starting performance of the season.

"Jamison had command the whole game," Haley said. "He has been struggling a little bit. Before the game, I told him that he can't worry about his record because it doesn't indicate what type of pitcher he is, and to just go out there, throw strikes and have fun."

Wilmington plated the winning run on a Jimmy Wolverton (London/Madison Plains) single in the top of the seventh.

For the game, Wilmington tallied five hits, three of which came off the bat of junior first baseman Mike Kroeger (Cincinnati/Elder).

Kroeger had two of Wilmington's three hits in game two, including a fourth-inning double that drove home junior shortstop Greg Krieger (Bellefontaine) with what proved to be the Quakers' only run of the game.

Junior Ronnie Campbell (Lynchburg/Lynchburg-Clay) gave up three runs in the second inning, but allowed just two hits over the final five innings in a tough-luck losing performance.

"Ronnie pitched really well, but we just couldn't hit," Haley said. "Now, we're in a hole, as far as the OAC tournament is concerned. Hopefully, we can bounce back Saturday."

The Quakers host Heidelberg in a 1 p.m. OAC doubleheader Saturday.
