Quakers
split seventh OAC double header of season
BEREA
(April 26, 2003) -- The Wilmington College Quakers split their fourth
consecutive double header of the season, defeating Baldwin-Wallace
2-0 in the first game before falling 7-8 n the second.
In
the first game, sophomore pitcher Derek Wellington (Chillicothe/Chillicothe)
pitched a complete game shutout, striking out one while scattering
six hits in the game. The Quakers got a run in the third and another
in the sixth, giving the visitors all the scoring that they would
need in the game. Tom Harter (Westlake/Westlake) led the way batting
for the Green and White, going 2-for-3 from the plate in the game.
In the second game Wilmington led 4-0 after the top of the third
inning before Baldwin-Wallace scored two in the bottom of the third,
five in the bottom of the fourth and another in the bottom of the
fifth. The Green and White, trailing 8-4 after five innings, scored
a run in the sixth inning before cutting the deficit to two in the
top of the seventh, but the comeback was a run shy of tying the
game, as the visitors were defeated 7-8.
The
team had 11 hits in 30 at bats in the game, with Justin Evans (Franklin/Franklin),
Chad Abbott (Hillsboro/Hillsboro), Ben Buehner (Germantown/Valley
View) and Brent Bird (Columbus/Hilliard Darby) each getting a pair
of hits in the game. Lawson scored three times for the Green and
White while Buehner knocked in a game-best three RBI's. Clayton
Reynolds (Blanchester/Blanchester) picked up the loss for the Quakers,
evening his record at 2-2, pitching three-and-two-thirds of an inning
in the loss.
With
the split the Quakers go to 22-12-1 on the year and 7-7 in conference
action. Baldwin-Wallace goes to 20-14 on the season and 8-6 in OAC
play.
The next game for the Green and White is on Tuesday, April 29 when
the team plays host to OAC opponent Capital University with the
first pitch set for 1:00 p.m.
