Quakers
split double header with Mount Union
ALLIANCE
(April 21, 2003) -- The Wilmington College Quakers split their fifth
straight OAC double header on Saturday, defeating the host Purple
Raiders 7-2 in the first game before falling 3-1 in the afternoon
game.
In the first game, the 7-2 victory, the Quakers found themselves
down 2-1 going into the top of the sixth inning before the team
scored two in the sixth, to take the lead, and then added four more
in the seventh to help seal the win. Justin Evans (Franklin/Franklin),
Ben Buehner (Germantown/Valley View) and Jerod Theobald (Cleves/LaSalle)
each batted 2-for-3 in the game for the Quakers while Evans drove
in a game best three runs. Luke Ogden (Peebles/Peebles) pitched
the entire seven innings, scattering six hits and allowing just
a single earned run while striking out three.
In the second game the Quakers fell behind in the third inning when
the host Purple Raiders scored a pair of runs in the inning before
the Green and White cut the deficit to one in the fifth inning.
Mt. Union then added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth,
and held on for the 3-1 victory. The Quakers managed just five hits
in the game, with Mike Kroeger (Cincinnati/Colerain) getting a pair
of those. Aaron Lawson (Hebron/Lakewood) knocked in the only run
in the game while Derek Wellington (Chillicothe/Chillicothe) picked
up his first loss of the season, pitching six innings and allowing
two earned runs while striking out one.
With
the split the Quakers go to 20-10-1 on the season and 5-5 in the
OAC while Mt. Union goes to 13-13 and 3-7 in conference action.
The
next game for the Green and White is set for Wednesday, April 24
when the team plays host to Ohio Northern University in a conference
double header with the first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.
